Twenty five years of experience in the catering industry running hotels and restaurants has taught Robert Macaleese lots of things. Robert quickly realised one of the key aspects to a successful, expanding career can be the use of local produce. He has been following that faithfully at his restaurants, Little Italy in Dumfries and Sotto in Carlisle.
It’s not by accident that Little Italy was Best Newcomer in the 2013 Scottish Italian Awards; Best Restaurant a year later; and named as one of the Top Five best restaurants in Scotland in the 2016 Entertainment Awards.
Those years of experience and hard work have given Robert Macaleese the keenest sense of the best in quality food. That’s why he buys his fish from local fishermen and gets his game from local shoots, cutting out the middle men. Of course, it also helps that Robert enjoys a bit of fishing and shooting himself.
On top of that he personally visits markets twice a week to order up produce for his restaurants.
Robert Macaleese first opened Little Italy in the picture postcard village of Moniaive in Glencairn north of Dumfries in 2011. It was the start of a successful business that saw him expand into much larger premises with Little Italy in Dumfries which, in turn, lead to his expansion into Carlisle not to mention his various awards.
They, of course, do not go unnoticed amongst customers and Robert is no stranger to catering for celebrities, Status Quo and a string of football teams having sampled the delights of Little Italy.
